Film Review: Wolf Creek (18)
Well, all the reviews I had read of Wolf Creek had really slammed it as being a rubbish horror flick. I must say, I was rather shocked and disturbed by the events that took place in the film.
A caption at the start of the movie stated that it was based on a true story. I’m always sceptical when movies say that because being based on something doesn’t actually mean that the events on screen happened, so I’m guessing there was a hefty amount of artistic license applied to the ‘truth’. At least I darn well hope there was because, unlike films like Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street and other ‘slasher’ flicks, this one really terrified me. The scariest thing about this film is that the depicted events could actually happen and maybe they did. Everything was believable. And utterly horrific.
The basic premise is two English travellers are in Australia; they meet up with an Ozzie guy and go to a meteor crater called Wolf Creek where their car inexplicably breaks down. A farmer picks them up and takes them to a remote mine where, after gaining their trust and allowing them to fall asleep, inflicts horrendous pain and torture on them. Its not a happy film. There’s not a happy ending.
If you like psychological thriller/horror, you’ll enjoy Wolf Creek. In hindsight, I’m glad I saw it so I can comment on it but I’d rather watch Freddie or Jason. 5/10
